Radiohead is still the best band in the world
August 25, 2003
The sound was amazing, the crowd was great, I couldn’t complain with the song selection, and the place smelled really good! But it sucked not having a good view of the band from the lawn, where most of the 30,000+ fans were. And we were standing relatively close to the front of the lawn area. Watching the band on the screens just isn’t the same as being able to see the band up close.
The cool thing about playing so few shows in America is that kids will drive from all over to see a band like Radiohead. There were cars from Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Missouri, Colorado, California, Manitoba and Ontario. And everyone seemed very friendly. I didn’t run into any of the annoying fans you usually see at an outdoor concert, except for the jackasses that wouldn’t let us merge in while exciting the lot.
Highlights for me were Kid A, Paranoid Android, Idioteque, There There, National Army, and still my favorite Radiohead song, Street Spirit (fade out). Some people get really annoyed when the crowd sings along with the band, but I love hearing such a huge sound of fans yelling out during songs like Fake Plastic Trees and Karma Police.
Compared to most other shows, this of course was one of the best. But I still enjoyed the show a few years ago outside of Seattle a little more. Either way, I’ve been so lucky to see Radiohead as many times as I’ve had. From a half full show at First Avenue right after The Bends was released, to the State Theater after OK Computer, and the last two at The Gorge and Alpine Valley Amphitheaters. I guess the only place better left would be at a festival in England. Maybe next year?
