How to turn a state liberal – Salon.com

In light of those words, Americans should be looking at what’s happening here to know what could soon be happening all over the country. If “as Colorado goes, so goes the nation,” then this square state is a glimpse into America’s potentially much brighter political future.

Probably too wishful of thinking, but way to go Colorado! From gun control to immigration, and drugs and civil unions, Colorado is looking pretty great these days.

Overstuffed precinct list grows in city | StarTribune.com

This blog told you earlier this month that 17 Minneapolis voting precincts failed the suggestion by the Minnesota Secretary of State’s office that precincts contain no more than 2,500 voters.

My precinct is on that list. And judging by the hour+ waiting times to vote all day long, I believe it. Especially since there is another polling place close by with basically no wait all day long.

We May Need Labor Unions After All – Business Insider

Great companies in a healthy and balanced economy don’t view employees as “inputs.” They don’t view them as “costs.” They don’t try to pay them “as little as they have to to keep them from quitting.” They view their employees as the extremely valuable assets they are (or should be). Most importantly, they share their wealth with them.

This article pretty much sums up my thoughts on the economy, unions, and corporations.

Unions, in their current state, are a problem, but that doesn’t mean Unions aren’t needed. In the past Unions were established to ensure fair working conditions, but fair pay and fair opportunity are now what Unions should be fighting for. And not just in old school Union organizations like teachers, blue color jobs, etc., but workers rights for all of us.

Rybak still mulling fourth term, downplays D.C. prospects | StarTribune.com

Rybak said he never expected to run for a third term, let alone a fourth. But he feels that the last term “wound up being far and away the one that I enjoyed the most, and got the most done.”

I’m a big RT Rybak supporter and his love for Minneapolis is one of the things I love most about him. I’m sure we’d be fine without him, but I think he’s done a great job here and would really like to see him stay and continue making Minneapolis a great place to live.

Rybak just has that perfect mix of business and community experience that makes him a great mayor. I’m also not quite sure who would be next in line after RT if he left. My only thought would be Paul Thissen, but it sounds like he will be the next House Speaker in the state, and could be pursuing a run at Governor in a few years.

The most important lesson that I’ve learned is that you can’t change Washington from the inside, you can only change it from the outside.

Why Barack Obama Will Be a Better Progressive in His Second Term – Kerry Eleveld – The Atlantic

But Obama also used his executive power to push profoundly progressive concerns that had long been considered third-rail issues in Washington. He declared the anti-gay Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional and instructed his Justice Department to stop defending it; he halted deportations of immigrant youth and provided them a path to getting work permits; and his administration stipulated that health-insurance plans must cover contraception.

Some of this article sounds fairly revisionist history, but I do believe that Obama isn’t as naive about the system as some on the left like to think, and will do some things these next four years that will really please progressives.

Such a great picture during a truly great speech.

I’ve pretty much avoided all political events since 9/11, but found myself watching last night. Conventions are pretty silly since it’s basically just a giant bubble, but I do really enjoy watching the speeches by those that I wasn’t quite as familiar with. People like Julian Castro, Deval Patrick, Lilly Ledbetter, and Tammy Duckworth were all excellent.
