Another week in, though, and I’m more convinced than even a week ago that the iPad Mini is the best size for most people.

Daring Fireball Linked List: The Real iPad

Here’s the way I see the iPad evolution. First, Apple comes out with a traditional size tablet, dominates that market like they did with the iPhone. For the next few years people said that the iPad was a consumption device, that people use them for reading and playing while on the couch or on vacation. Any real work would be done on a laptop or desktop computer. This is the way I used my iPad and loved it for just that reason. But then came talk about people that were actually using their iPads for real work, either with a bluetooth or the on screen keyboard. Suddenly the iPad was no longer just a consumption device.

Well, if the iPad is no longer purely a device just for reading and playing, that really opens the door for a smaller iPad. I think that sales of the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire proved that people wanted one, and I’m sure that plenty of Apple users bought those devices, so it was definitely time for Apple to make one.

Now that the iPad Mini has been out for a week or so, most reviews I’ve read really do call this the ideal iPad, that one device you use on the couch, in bed, and on vacation. For reading, playing games, checking twitter and facebook, it’s the real consumption device when you want something bigger than your iPhone, but still want to hold it with one hand with ease.

The most important lesson that I’ve learned is that you can’t change Washington from the inside, you can only change it from the outside.

Why Barack Obama Will Be a Better Progressive in His Second Term – Kerry Eleveld – The Atlantic

But Obama also used his executive power to push profoundly progressive concerns that had long been considered third-rail issues in Washington. He declared the anti-gay Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional and instructed his Justice Department to stop defending it; he halted deportations of immigrant youth and provided them a path to getting work permits; and his administration stipulated that health-insurance plans must cover contraception.

Some of this article sounds fairly revisionist history, but I do believe that Obama isn’t as naive about the system as some on the left like to think, and will do some things these next four years that will really please progressives.

In one case of a jazz club owner who would not stock Summit, Stutrud and confreres would regularly visit the club and quietly drop Summit coasters on the tables. As patrons began asking for Summit, the club owner finally relented and began buying from Stutrud.

I can’t tell you how badly we didn’t want to lose a hundred games. Ninety-nine is bad, but it’s not fucking one hundred.

Today, there are more commercial vacancies on this portion of Lake Street than the rest of the Street from Hiawatha to Lake Calhoun combined.

East Lake Street Walking Tour | Redesign, Inc.

Ouch. East Lake Street needs help, but I’m out of ideas. There was always talk about restaurants and bars opening up, but it never happened, and the one big get for Longfellow, Turtle Bread, chose a much quieter neighborhood insection four blocks off of Lake. And the rumored Blue Door Pub is looking for the same.

East Lake between 35W and Hiawatha is packed with Latino and African businesses, but except for Nuevo Rodeo and T’s Place, they never really moved east of Hiawatha.

There are plenty of great places along East Lake (Longfellow Grill, Craftsman, Merlin’s Rest), but far too many empty buildings.

I love baseball, you know it doesn’t have to mean anything, it’s just very beautiful to watch.
